Keep your ears open, writers who are pondering a nom de plume for their literary offerings. Ideas can come from unexpected and even whimsical sources. The great Samuel Langhorne Clemons, for example, was once a steamboat captain on the mighty Mississippi and, true to his responsibilities, listened attentively as his crew gauged the depth of the river during navigation. When entering riverbed shallows of twelve feet, these fellows would shout, “Mark twain!” to indicate that two fathoms should be duly registered by the captain and other members of the crew. For whatever reason, this expression struck Samuel’s fancy and, lo!—a classic pseudonym was born.

The next time you are browsing titles in your favorite bookstore and happen upon a tome written by Fasten Seatbelts, know that the author likely experienced a bit of sudden and harrowing turbulence at 30,000 feet in the wild blue yonder.
