Another recent piece I drew on Bristol board, 11 x 14, three India Ink washes, Arteeza pencils, Acrylic/ Oil/Watercolor paint flourishes, paint pens, theatrical grease paint pencils, and, of course, pen and ink. This one took a month to complete. I wanted to use it in a book but publishers and pubbing platforms are shying away from elaborate colored illustrations due to cost. I could frame it and sell it to fans of fantasy/horror art, but the cost of framing (properly) is astronomical—as it should be, in a way, because framing is an art-form in itself. These works are a lot in terms of time, materials, and did I say TIME? Still, I don’t want to abandon the “old fashioned” way, labor intensive as it is. It’s original art or it isn’t. I may scale down to 8 & 1/2 by 11 Bristol, but I like the detail that can be explored in a larger piece like this. I really wonder about the future of original illustration.
