Join the festivities! You can have as many glasses of champagne as you like but if you go after my steak, you just might pull back a bloody stump.
It feels so weird being on a little sabbatical from writing and editing after a two-year non-stop phase marked by unwavering intensity. I must admit, I’m sleeping like a happy cat and enjoying a few “jollies” (see photo) that weren’t a regular part of the life-equation while in creative mode.
At the same time, however, it is quite difficult to suspend the gears and mechanisms of the mind that seem to operate in perpetual motion while writing/illustrating a major novel and preparing five novellas/short stories for publication. One feels, at least in my case, a bit untethered when cast into the wild winds of freedom.
I don’t have to get up, coffee up, and then saunter over to the laptop each morning and train my weary eyes with laser-like focus upon the computer screen until I sweat?
No last-minute, fussy flourishes upon this or that illustration?
I might as well be stranded on the surface of the moon!
It takes time to come down from a prolonged writing jag. Fellow writers and artists will know exactly what I’m talking about. The remnants of world-building energy have to be redirected. Long walks are helpful, especially if Autumn in your world is coming in as mildly as it is in my world. I have mentioned my temporary shift to woodwork, which helps because it draws upon creative impulses that can be applied to already-existing material items (blocks, planks, and burls of wood). The craft is calming, almost hypnotic, for me. A different energy, entirely.
Yet, there is the need to promote works already in the bag, already “dropped,” and that is a never-ending game. While that process can be more rote and perfunctory in certain ways, one still needs to execute. Up until now, I have had a book management team handling that end of the production spectrum, which has been a life-saver. Beginning this week, however, I must take over the duties myself until the beginning of 2027, when new plans will be rolled-out, resumed, etc.
Basically, you can never really get away from your own books in this day and age. But take heart. There’s always champagne.
